Lets just start out with the definition of growing pains – Pains in the limbs and joints of children or adolescents, often attributed to rapid growth but arising from various unrelated causes.
Now I understand you reading this you may not be a child or an adolescent but you probably have a business and more then likely a young business, even if you’ve been in for a while it’s still a young business if you aren’t achieving the success you were planning. Growing pains are not fun at all just imagine when your bones are growing at such a rapid pace that you can feel it, OUCH! I didn’t experience that growing to 5 10″. But I did experience it in business and it will be painful from unrelated causes like your spouse doesn’t want you doing the business, because she thinks it’s a scam because she heard from her mom who did one of those things or the economy is bad in your sector so no one wants your service that you decided to not tell anyone about anyways. OKAY!
Different Growing Pains
There’s all sorts of growing pains like the company changes the comp plan so you miss out on some money or they got rid of a product or changed a product and it’s not the same or they were suppose to come out with this game changing service, product or comp plan and it didn’t happen. The company missed your check or messed up on it, you missed a bonus by not knowing the cutoff for the contest was Eastern time zone not Pacific. What about the company getting rid of your favorite president or CEO. Growing pains happen in business it happens in life and it’s absolutely natural, did you quit on yourself when you went through or go through growing pain growth spurts? Of course you don’t or you definitely shouldn’t so don’t quit on your business.
A Message and Solution From A True Mentor
I was talking to one of my good friends and great mentor Tom Challan of Priority Team when he called me today. I told him about my month and a half break and how hard it has been to get going full steam ahead like normal. To me I know it was just an excuse because it is really just like a switch, you turn it on and take action, he agreed and that is a growing pain as well because in business you will have them your whole life, but the difference is how you react to the growing pain. Anyways we were talking about that and past businesses and decisions we had made to do or not to continue on with something and it was all related to businesses growing pains and what we felt was best to soothe our immediate growing pains instead of having vision and continue on with that vision. In the end of the conversation when it was all said and done Tom said “Madiba, millionaires are made in our industry, there was a kid 27years old and 4years later he was making over 4 million per year. he is no different then you or I or anybody else, he just made a decision to stick with his company and make it happen.”
